It's an incredible struggle for me to be proud of a boy who did not care that his mother was not present in Malacañan Palace for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
If he had skipped the Malacanan rites because his mother couldn't be there, that would have gone down in history as the greatest tribute a child ever gave to the woman who gave birth to him.
He had the chance but he blew it.
Time will come when winning Olympic medals will become commonplace, even routine, for Filipinos as advancements in sports technology and scientific training methods continue to level the playing field of world athletics.
Those two gold medals can only get less and less talked about as the years go by. Hidilyn Diaz will attest to that. Even greatness will fade, speed will decay, luster will dim, bluster will mellow, pride will erode and in the end our bodies break down, our health will fail. Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson are proofs of that.
But mothers---mothers will stay forever priceless, forever irreplaceable. But unacknowledged mothers will forever be sobbing in some lonely corner somewhere.
Foxy women and sultry girlfriends, any which way they undress, will forever be self-objectifying, crass, cheap and irrelevant distractions.
Choosing who to honor was a no-brainer.
