"I have had my share of challenging family members of patients. I understand completely when, at times, they get angry or anxious because having a relative suffering with COVID can be overwhelming. But, I think respect also needs to go both ways. Today I received a call, a referral of an elderly patient who was about to be admitted because of severe covid. I got a call from her daughter in the US. I was taken aback by how she addressed me "doctor, you have been highly recommended, but I want to know your qualifications. Send me a copy of your diploma and CV." Before I could reply, she continued in a very condescending tone "you need to understand, that I'm a nurse in the US, and you are merely just a doctor in the Philippines. So I want to be sure you are competent. I also require you to report to me daily, bec God knows how careless 3rd world healthcare workers are."
It was such a terrible phonecall to think, she is also a Filipino, but working in the US. I respectfully replied, " pls look for another specialist. I don't think I would pass your criteria ". She then asked" OK then, give me a number of your most qualified specialist". I said that I can't do that without their consent. She then said "ikaw na doc., no need to send CV, I trust you na. Ikaw na mag manage sa mother ko.". I then said "I apologize hindi ko ata kaya Yan, since as you said, I am just a doctor from the Philippines."
This is just too much. Doctors and health workers also have the right to be dealt with respect and dignity. We are doing our best to save as much lives as we can, sacrificing comfort and at times, safety. We don't deserve to be treated like this."
