Education has been a recurring problem in the Philippines, as many children have not been able to access it. However, it seems like even those who have access to education does not get the proper amount or quality of it.

High school students unable to read

Some high school teachers in Quezon City were initially shocked when they found out that their students do not know how to read.

According to teachers in Sauyo High School, also once known as Pasong Tamo High School, a public high school in Quezon City, Metro Manila, a lot of their students do not know how to read.

They even said that a lot of their students does not recognize basic alphabets and numbers, even basic colors and shapes.

The teachers in the high school said that they should not have passed elementary to begin with.

Of course it is quite obvious that those who reach high school should already know how to read, count and write. They should be able to do so with ease and mastery, as well as completely know about the multiplication table and such.

Should not have passed elementary

According to the teachers, with this level, the students should not have graduated to begin with. Reading and writing is something that is learned when you start out elementary.

They said that they highly question how the students were able to advance to grade 1 and Grade 2 to begin with.

The teachers say the elementary teachers are partly to be blamed for this unfortunate incident.

Because of competition

According to the teachers, they say that one of the reasons this could be happening is the competition amongst elementary private schools.

A teacher from Sauyo High School named Arnel Salva said that one of the reasons why it could be happening is that public school are always in competition with each other. They have always been trying to outperform one another and at the end of the day, this performance is a game of numbers.

To be the best school, one criteria is to have the highest number of passing rate.

Because of this criteria, Salva says that teachers may have simply allowed their students to pass even though they did not learn anything in reality.

Salva also says that when a school is considered to be the best performing high school, the reward is mass promotion of their teachers. When teachers are promoted, they no longer need to teach basic lessons like reading and writing to their students.

Science teacher Jefferson Isorena weighed in and said that maybe one of the reasons as well for the problem existing is that if students fail, teachers are always to be blamed. Maybe elementary teachers do not want to experience this problem and to be blamed because then they would have to work extra hours and do remedial classes to those who failed.

Helping the kids

Good thing for the students in Sauyo High School because their teachers are taking things seriously and have taken it upon themselves to help the students the best way they can.

They have created special lessons called “Section Darwin” to help these kids catch up and learn more.
