This, after the senate of the United States of America has approved an amendment in connection with the now-detained Senator Leila Delima.
A recently-proposed bill has been passed by a US senate committee that is directed to the very own officials of our country.
Said bill is controversial as it aims to block entry of “any Philippine government official who has been involved in the detention of Senator Leila de Lima” in hopes to put pressure to the Duterte administration to free the beleaguered senator.
Dick Durbin, the senator who is responsible for the enactment of this law, aired his thoughts on twitter about the bill that has been passed, lauding the committee on appropriations.
“Good to see the Senate Appropriations Committee pass my amendment with @SenatorLeahy today to prohibit entry to any Philippine Government Officials involved in the politically motivated imprisonment of Filipina Senator Leila de Lima in 2017. We must #FreeLeilaNow,” Durbin tweeted.
Recently, Senator Marco Rubio, another american senator, surfaced to lobby for Delima's release.
They are only two of the five US senators who filed a resolution in the US Senate condemning De Lima's detention. The other three were Ed Markey, Marsha Blackburn, and Chris Coons.
Since February 2017, De Lima has been staying behind bars at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame. The staunch critic of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte constantly denied involvement in the charges pressed against her, saying they are all part of the political persecution by this administration.
