Barretto and her friends are drawing flak for a video that showed them laughing at someone’s letter asking for their help.
In the video which quickly became viral, Patty Pineda is seen reading the letter from someone based in Surigao City. It read: “My eldest po this January has been diagnosed with butas sa puso. Been sending my request for my brother who had two… duodenal (sic) mass and chest lymphoma and soon for chemo po and sana mabasa niyo po. Since it’s a (sic) Mother’s Day, ang request ko po sana is Ensure milk for my mother-in-law… Lilia … na 73-years-old mag-isa lang po siya…”
Barretto and Mimi Que are seen laughing at the letter as Pineda was reading them.
The video gathered several criticisms from netizens who found the act of laughing at a person asking for help as cruel.
“Inappropriate to show this video in public tsk!.so insensitive!” he wrote. “Kung tutulong lang [naman] din bat pa pagtatawanan (If you’re you’re going to helping, why do you have to laugh at the letter writer)?” said Harvey Balicog who shared the video on Facebook.
A Karl Max Labanon said, “You don’t laugh, maybe the letter did not get any decent education but they still tried to communicate via the English language, this is not to be ridiculed but be understood with utmost compassion as they are in need of help.”
But the letter writer herself said that she did not take offense at the laughter and thanked Barretto anyway for her help.
Meanwhile, Juera said that the video may just have been taken out of context, and said that Barretto was good anyway for helping out Filipinos who send letters.
Barretto has been granting letter senders' requests and posting it on her instagram account.
"I have watched your recent video that is now being viral on social media, Facebook, Instagram, and on Youtube site. This is where about a letter sender from Mindanao Region. It is where the letter sender is obviously asking for financial assistance or support rather. That was the gist of the letter being read by your pal," Juera said.
He added that Barretto's act of reading the letter despite her time being "precious" is good, and yet her acts of kindness get a lot of suspicion, being a high profile individual.
He noted how there were mixed reactions on the video, and that many questioned why Barretto had to laugh at someone who was in need of help.
"I am pretty much sure that you and your pals have no intention to belittle the letter" he said this is because the audience can not tell for sure what the context of the video is.
He added that Filipinos naturally have the heart to help others and what matters, regardless of being rich or poor, is one's desire to help others out of the spirit of patriotism and nationalism.
He left a message to Barreto, "Please help the family, sobra sobra ang biyayang nasa iyo ngayon, kapiranggot lang ang maibabawas niyan sayo. More blessings to come."

This is an Open Letter for Miss Gretchen Barretto-Cojuangco.
Greetings to you, Your Highness!
I have watched your recent video that is now being viral on social media, Facebook, Instagram, and on Youtube site. This is where about a letter sender from Mindanao Region. It is where the letter sender is obviously asking for financial assistance or support rather. That was the gist of the letter being read by your pal.
On my own perception, asking a favor or help from a needy is might be serious and too personal enough to grasp your precious time just to read the letter. In here, it takes a lot of doubts or suspicious acts because we belong to a highly profiled individuals. So means, it's basically our discretion if the favor is something that is gonna be passable or not.
Mix of reactions, some were being so negative on their understanding on the video apprehended. Too many thoughts and questions, Why and so many Why should we laugh at a very serious matter concerning of a needy. Could we just help privately with no humiliation by means of scrutinizing the context of the letter? Or perhaps, its' a matter of Language Barrier (dialect specifically).
I am pretty much sure that you and your pals have no any intentions to belittle the letter because of we didn't know if it based on how your pal delivers the context or maybe she just read it mispelled and gramatically incorrect or some other reasons.
But still and above all, we Filipinos have the heart to help others, it doesnt really matter at all if we are rich or poor or average as long as helping our co-pinoy's a symbolism of being patriotic and nationalism.
Greta! 😂😉 Please help the family, sobra sobra ang biyayang nasa iyo ngayon, kapiranggot lang ang maibabawas niyan sayo. More blessings to come.
Thank You.
Best Regards,
